The YMCA Digital Young Creatives will be attending the Newark Christmas Lights Switch On on 24th November!
A group of our amazing young attendees from The Newark Academy, with the guidance of the Newark Young Promotors and YMCA Digital staff team, have formed a choir group covering popular songs and medleys and even writing their own material. They have already performed at Newark Festival under the name ’School of Peculiar Music’. They will be singing a host of beloved Christmas tunes, and even debuting some of their own original music.
The Newark Young Promoters are working with young people aged between 11 and 18, delivering open sessions during term-time as an after-school activity. The programme is designed to offer progressive opportunities for young people in both music-making and promotion, working with both The Newark Academy and Mount C of E Primary School.
The programme will teach young people skills in song writing and performance. It will also help them to develop life skills including confidence, self-esteem, communication and team-building skills.
Thanks to the funding from Youth Music, YMCA Digital are providing these sessions at no cost to the participants, and the Newark Young Promotors who run the sessions. Nottinghamshire YMCA encourage the Young Promotors to take leadership roles within the project, to engage their peers, and to start branching out to local events organisers, music industry professionals, and venues.
You can support our young people in building a creative community in Newark by cheering very loudly for the School of Peculiar Music on Sunday!
