We recently welcomed World YMCA President Soheila Hayek, alongside YMCA England & Wales Vice President Peter Posner OBE to the YMCA Community & Activity Village in Newark. Their visit highlighted the strong bond between global YMCA leadership and the local Newark and Sherwood community.
Soheila and Peter toured the extensive community and activity facilities, expressing their admiration for the Village’s approach to fostering community engagement. They praised the diverse facilities that support Newark and surrounding areas, reinforcing the importance of a local presence.
The visit coincided with a summer training session for YMCA Camp Williams, Camp Leaders, where Soheila shared her personal journey with the YMCA. Soheila spoke about the vital role the YMCA played during the Lebanese civil war, delivering crucial aid and medical supplies as the only neutral organisation. “The YMCA’s ability to adapt and meet the needs of children and young people is truly remarkable,” she said. She detailed how the YMCA became a lifeline during the conflict, and after the war, it became a key partner to the Ministry of Public Health, delivering medicine to over 500 dispensaries. This powerful testimony highlighted the enduring impact of the YMCA’s mission worldwide and its resonance within local communities like Newark.
Soheila and Peter saw a NICAS (National Indoor Climbing Scheme) class with young children confidently climbing in the Climbing Centre. Outside, players practiced on the football pitches, demonstrating the Village’s commitment to promoting physical health and teamwork among young people. Inside, the RHP Football Club were preparing for their end-of-season presentation in the Conference Room, commenting on the community spirit through sports within the Village.
Soheila and Peter then met musicians who were rehearsing in one of the Education Rooms, which support arts and youth creativity. In the YMCA Café, Soheila spoke with customers, many of whom were parents of children participating in activities. She expressed her admiration for the YMCA Nursery, noting its open doors leading to expansive play areas that encourage exploration. “It’s wonderful to see how the YMCA here has created such a welcoming and vibrant community environment for families,” Soheila commented.
Steffen Benbow, Executive Director or YMCA Newark and Sherwood shared insights into the successes of the YMCA Children’s Residential Care Homes across Nottinghamshire, highlighting the positive outcomes of their therapeutic care model. “We’re seeing remarkable growth in confidence among the children, thanks to the wraparound care provided. Some are now able to participate in YMCA Camp Williams, they love taking part in all the activities and it’s wonderful to see them thrive in such a supportive environment.”
Joe Piliero, YMCA Robin Hood Group Executive Director of Hospitality, spoke about the impressive progression rates of young people in YMCA Supported Housing facilities, emphasising the comprehensive range of courses offered, from cooking and career advice to outdoor education and financial literacy. “Our aim is to equip these young individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive independently.”
Soheila Hayek’s extensive experience in non-profit leadership and youth empowerment was evident throughout the visit. With over a decade at YMCA Lebanon and involvement in various NGOs, she demonstrated a deep understanding of strategic planning, governance, and advocacy. Her global perspective, having lived and worked across multiple continents, enriches her approach to leadership. “Empowering today’s youth with the necessary resources is not just important; it’s essential,” Soheila affirmed.
The visit concluded with a renewed sense of inspiration and commitment to the YMCA’s mission. Our Community & Activity Village stands as a testament to the organisation’s enduring impact, providing a supportive and nurturing environments for all members of the community. Soheila’s visit highlighted the global unity and purpose that drives the YMCA, bringing together diverse communities to create positive change and foster a better future for young people.
