Malt Cross has once again brought festive cheer to the city with its much-loved “Beer and Carols” nights. Held across four evenings in December, our events combined great food, lively carol singing, and generous donations, raising over £800 to support local YMCA community programmes. These funds will help further our mission to provide vital services to vulnerable young people and families across Nottinghamshire.
The Beer and Carols nights took place throughout mid-December, attracting a wide range of attendees from all corners of the city. Each evening began with a two-course festive feast, followed by the loved carol singing. The festive meals, which sold out quickly, meant our guests enjoyed two courses and automatic entry to the singing event, while the Beer and Carols portion was open to all for free.
Guests enjoyed singing classic Christmas carols in the Malt Cross, with live music and was a hit with both regulars and newcomers alike, contributing to a memorable festive experience.
“This was our second year attending Beer and Carols, traveling all the way from Devon, and it was absolutely worth it!” said Paul Taylor. “There’s nothing like singing Christmas classics with a room full of people sharing the same festive spirit, it’s such a fun experience. We arrived early for dinner, which was delicious, and the service was outstanding. The staff were friendly, efficient, and accommodating, even finding space for three extra guests we brought along. The whole evening was just perfect, a fantastic way to create lasting memories with family and friends.”
As well as hosting these festive events, we continue to be a hub for community support through our partnership with the Nottingham Street Pastors. Based at the Malt Cross, our dedicated team of volunteers play a vital role in supporting Nottingham’s nightlife, particularly during the busy Christmas period. The Street Pastors offer a reassuring presence, practical assistance, and a listening ear to those out enjoying the city, making sure that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable time.
The YMCA Robin Hood’s Christmas campaign was also highlighted during the Beer and Carols events. The initiative invites the community to pledge their support by donating essential items such as food, clothing, and gifts or by making monetary contributions. The campaign specifically aims to support young people and families in the care of YMCA during what can be a challenging time of year. Attendees at the Beer and Carols events were encouraged to make a pledge, whether it was offering items or time, and to help spread the word to ensure more people in Nottingham feel cared for this Christmas. Malt Cross has long been a cornerstone of Nottingham’s social fabric, and its Beer and Carols nights have become a firm favourite, with many of our patrons making them an annual tradition. Our unique blend of history, culture, and community spirit, combined with the festive atmosphere, makes it a special place to get into the Christmas spirit.
“The support we received this year has been fantastic,” said Joe Piliero, Executive Director of Hospitality, YMCA Robin Hood. “We’re thrilled that we were able to bring people together for such fun nights, all while raising funds for an important cause. It’s a perfect example of how the Malt Cross continues to play a pivotal role in supporting our local community.”
With our mix of entertainment, tradition, and charity, the Malt Cross’s Beer and Carols nights continue to be a highlight of Nottingham’s festive calendar, and organisers are already looking forward to next year’s celebrations.
