Global Recycling Day recognises the important role of recycling in preserving natural resources and contributing to an environmentally stable and greener future which will benefit all.
With the ‘Seventh Resource’ (recyclables) saving over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions every year, the Global Recycling Foundation is calling for each of us to champion recycling and raise awareness to help others do to the same.
The official Global Recycling Day website explained: “Every year, the Earth yields billions of tons of natural resources and at some point, in the not too distant future, it will run out. That’s why we must think again about what we throw away – seeing not waste, but opportunity.” Recycling was formally recognised in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 2030 as the waste industry directly affects humanity with increased poverty, immigration from displaced communities, job losses, waste mountains and natural habitats disappearing.
To help combat this issue, supporters can recycle everything from cardboard and plastics to glass and many other household items. It is also important to know what items are not recyclable as recycling inappropriate products could cause contamination further along the process.
Building a sustainable future
