Nottinghamshire YMCA’s Facilities Manager Mark Crane pushed himself to the limit last month by taking on the ‘Lakeland 50’ to raise funds for youth outdoor education.
50 miles, 24 hours… one great cause!
To the external spectator, this event is simply a lovely jog in the Lake District during the height of summer – but there’s a twist! As one of the greatest ultra-running challenges in Europe, participants must complete 50 gruelling miles across hilly terrain in less than 24 hours to be crowned victorious.
Armed with his 15-litre emergency rucksack, waterproof map and compass, Mark set out on his voyage at 11.30am on Saturday 28 July, covering undulating terrain, climbs in access of 650m and unruly weather conditions.
Having burned 9,000 calories and lost several toenails along the way(!), Mark – who was accompanied on this adventure by his friend, Steve – managed to successfully complete the challenge in an impressive 14hrs 58mins.
‘Enabling youth outdoor education’
Funds raised will go towards enabling the North-West charity ‘Epic Kids’ to deliver outdoor activities to children in Cumbria.
“What an incredible, exhausting and worthwhile experience,” said Mark on finishing the challenge.
“It was my ex-squaddie friend Steve who talked me into doing it. Even though I acquired a cracking blister and couldn’t walk for two days afterwards – it was all worth it to know our efforts will fund outdoor education experiences for young people.
“At Nottinghamshire YMCA, we know how important it is that all children are awarded equal learning opportunities, regardless of their social or economic background.
“There were surreal moments during the expedition when we lost the light and the only visible things were the flickering torches of fellow trekkers!I would like to say the biggest ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported me and donated to this valuable cause.”
Supporting Nottinghamshire YMCA
And this is only the beginning for Mark and Steve.
Next year, the intrepid duo plan to take on the more local ‘Outlaw Triathlon’ challenge, which takes place in Nottingham in September 2019. This time, Mark and Steve will be raising vital funds and awareness for Nottinghamshire YMCA’s frontline services.
“It’s my turn to call on Steve to tackle challenges for a good cause!” said Mark. “After the Lakeland 50, we can’t wait to take on a local event to generate funds and awareness of how our charity’s vital frontline services support local vulnerable people. Bring on next year!”
